What makes Connecticut different
Connecticut has seven brackets, but its real complexity is in the phase-outs: the personal exemption disappears for most full-time workers, and higher earners gradually lose the benefit of the lowest rates. Connecticut also withholds 0.5% of wages for its Paid Leave program. There are no city income taxes.
- Connecticut has no standard deduction; the personal exemption ($15,000 single, $24,000 joint) phases out quickly above $30,000 of AGI ($48,000 joint).
- Above $56,500 of AGI (single), part of the 2% bracket is taxed at 4.5%, and above $105,000 a “benefit recapture” adds up to $250; both are included. Larger recaptures above $200,000 are not.
- Connecticut’s Paid Leave contribution (0.5% of wages up to the Social Security wage base) and the personal tax credit for lower incomes are not included.
