2026 federal tax brackets
The U.S. has a progressive tax: each rate applies only to the income within its bracket. For 2026 (returns filed in 2027), single filers pay 10% up to $12,400, 12% to $50,400, 22% to $105,700, 24% to $201,775, 32% to $256,225, 35% to $640,600 and 37% above. Married-filing-jointly brackets are generally double.
How it’s calculated
Tax = Σ (income in each bracket × rate) − credits
Refund or amount owed = tax already withheld − tax due.
Marginal vs. effective rate
Your marginal rate is the rate on your last dollar; your effective rate is total tax ÷ income, which is always lower.
Worked example
With these inputs: total income (wages + other)$90,000; filing statusSingle; pre-tax contributions (401k, hsa)$6,000; federal tax already withheld$9,000.
The calculator gives a estimated amount owed of $650 (2026 federal tax: $9,650). Other results: taxable income$67,900, standard deduction$16,100, marginal rate22%, effective rate10.7%.
What your results mean
Your marginal rate applies only to your last dollar of income; your effective rate is total tax divided by income. A refund means more was withheld than you owe; a balance due means too little was withheld.
Tips
- Itemize only if your deductions exceed the standard deduction.
- Credits reduce tax dollar-for-dollar, so they are worth more than deductions.
- Adjust your W-4 if you owe or get a large refund every year.
