    Alabama income tax in 2026

    4%$500$1,000
    5%$3,000$6,000

    What makes Alabama different

Alabama’s brackets are tiny and have not been updated in decades, so almost every worker pays the 5% top rate on most of their income. Two features soften that: Alabama is one of the few states that lets you deduct your federal income tax, and its standard deduction is larger for lower earners. Some cities, including Birmingham, add a 1% occupational tax on wages.

    • Alabama lets you deduct the federal income tax you pay, which this calculator includes.
    • The standard deduction shrinks as income rises: $3,000 for single filers with AGI up to $25,499, falling to a $2,500 floor.
    • The dependent exemption ($1,000 or less depending on income) is not included.
    • Birmingham, Gadsden and several other Alabama cities and counties levy an occupational tax (often 0.5%–2%) on wages earned there; it is not included.

    What your results mean

    Tips

    • Pre-tax 401(k) contributions lower both your federal and Alabama taxable income.
